Dyeing Blended Fabrics -- The Ultimate Compromise?

Careful, well-informed dye selection is critical for efficient dyeing of blend fabrics. Factors that affect dye selection and evaluation include homogeneity, absorption in solution, shade area, color value, build-up in blend dyeing conditions, reproducibility, storage stability, compatibility with other classes of dyes and dyeing assistants, levelling, migration, substantivity, diffusion, reactivity, fixation, sensitivity to redox conditions, cross staining, wash-off efficiency, aqueous solubility, crystal modification, particle size, trace metals, toxicity, biodegradation, sludge absorption, penetration, differential fading, and fastness. Problems specific to the dyeing of wool/nylon and acrylic/polyester blends are discussed. 11 refs.
