The affinity of direct and vat dyes for cellulose fibers is examined by comparing these dyes with dyes that differ only by their chromophore groups. It was revealed that another factor might be responsible for their affinity. An aromatic diamine was used to initiate the synthesis of these dyes through tetrazotization, coupling, or condensation. The dyeing results are discussed. 22 refs.
