An evaluation of commercial fixative must be based on techniques that permit accurate assessment of not only the positive money-value effectiveness of the fixatives, but also the negative effects these products may have on lightfastness. Some of these techniques are illustrated through the use of data generated using a range of commercially available products. Efficiency indexes are developed that can be useful in helping the dyer to select the best product for his needs. 5 refs.
