The batik dyeing technique is preferred in India over the discharge printing technique because batik preserves background colors. The wax used and the method of handling the fabric during batik printing account for the quality of the process. Batik techniques include the traditional method of using a dyebath to apply color, the brush method whereby color is applied with a brush, and the method of applying the dye prior to waxing the fabric. Methods of resist printing for African prints include using flour as a resist, using tie-dye, or using gathered stitching.
