A look at the local application of dyes or pigments in specified areas of the fabric according to a multicolored design addresses knowledge gained in Europe from the Chinese method of block printing onto silk fabrics. A description of other innovative machinery includes that of the engraved roller printer, screen printing, and transfer printing. Alternatives to vapor transfer printing are also mentioned, such as melt-transfer and film-release. Screen printing has been modified to accommodate tufted nylon carpet yarns, and jet-printing has developed in order to produce multiple colors on carpets.
