Because of the oil crisis and imports, the United States dye industry has been in flux since the mid-1970s. Consequently, the number of companies has decreased by about half. Crompton and Knowles has survived theses problems through a niche market strategy that emphasizes flexibility and small volume. The company relies on computer color matching, on-line computer systems for order entry and inventory control, and multi-purpose production units that can be quickly converted for optimum cost-effectiveness.
