Finishing processes consume considerable amounts of water and energy (electricity and heating). Most of these processes use chemicals and assistants to slow down or accelerate the chemical reactions, thereby avoiding temperature increases during mass transfer from teh liquid medium to the fabric. Mass transfer is dependent on time and temperature, and a compromise between these two factors is necessary to achieve the desired quality. The use of ultrasound in finishing saves processing time, energy, and chemicals and improves end product quality. A literature review suggests that ultrasound also offers improved process control and reduced wastewater contamination. 26 refs.
