A low cost anaerobic/anoxic fixed film bioreactor system removes color from spent reactive dyebaths while conserving water and salt and reducing wastewater wolume and treatment costs. The resultant biologically renovated high salt containing dyebath can be reused in the dyeing process. Researchers used methanogenic cultures without salt, as well as halotolerant and microaerophilic cultures, to decolorize selected reactive dyes at very high decoloration rates. Using a suspended growth, methanogenic cultures rapidly decolorized a spent dyebath from a commercial package dyeing plant. 9 refs.
