A traditional black by dye consisting of an iron and plant polyphenol complex destabilizes New Zealand flax fibers due to its low pH and high iron content. As degradation proceeds, the hue changes and the extent of degradation increases. A high proportion of noncellulosic xylan polysaccharide accelerates the degradation. Increasing the relative humidity accelerates the rate of degradation. Abstract.
