Approximately 70 percent of home laundering in Europe occurs at temperatures of 50 degrees centigrade or less. The most commonly used bleach activator for such low temperature washing is tetra-acetylethylene diamine (TAED), which reacts with generated hydrogen peroxide to form peracetic acid. Bleach activators, however, often result in oxidative bleach fading of dyed fabrics. A UMIST study used the new UK-TO test method for bleach fading to determine the oxidative bleach sensitivity of vat, azoic, sulfur, reactive, and direct dyes in fabrics laundered at low temperatures with TAED bleach activators.
