Water is a scarce and expensive resource for the dyeing industry, which has historically used large quantities of water for its processes and generated large quantities of effluent as a result. For cost and environmental reasons, therefore, it has become imperative to conserve water. A review of water conservation discusses the control of water consumption by the textile industry in the United Kingdom, reduction of reprocessing, and optimal liquor ratios for dyeing processes. Dye and chemical manufacturers are also developing new dyes, dyeing assistants, and other textile chemicals that function well under low water use conditions.
