Researchers studied the oxidative degradation of two dyes and a nonionic surfactant by Fenton's reagent (iron sulfate and hydrogen peroxide) in the presence of ultraviolet irradiation. The study determined residual total organic carbon (TOC) as a function of time at differing initial TOC concentrations and temperatures. Residual TOC values were stable after a given treatment time. TOC removal rates depended on reagent concentration, starting TOC values, and ultraviolet irradiation. Ultraviolet irradiation strongly accelerated degradation reactions and reduced residual TOC. Dyehouse effluent samples showed similar patterns. A first order equation explained the proposed kinetic model. 10 refs.
