A study attached an in-line analyzer flow cell to a pilot scale package dyeing machine to control the amount of dye exhausted during the dyeing cycle. The curved back of the flow cell provided multiple path lengths for adequate by precise measurement of absorbance over three decades of dye concentration change. Regression analysis and Laplace transformation equations calculated path length distribution. Online Minolta CR200 tristimulus colorimetry reported XYZ and L*, a*, b* values from the measurement of reflectance in the cell, which were then correlated with data from a Colergen CS1100 full spectrum spectrophotometer. A match prediction program predicted the concentration in the dyebath at various times during the dyeing process. Because the relationship between K/S values and dye concentration deviated from linearity, the program combined linear, logarithmic, and polynomial curves with regression analysis. 20 refs.
