Such cyclic imides as phthalimide, benzimidazole, quinoxalinedione, and phthalazinedone form intermolecular hydrogen bonds that facilitate high thermal stability and low solubility. Using these groups in soluble dyes can improve dye affinity via the aggregation of dyes in solution and on the fiber. Some researchers claim that excessive aggregation of reactive dyes containing benzimidazolones may cause difficulties during dyeing processes at temperatures lower than 95 degrees centigrade. They report that controlling dyeing conditions by reducing the concentration of electrolytes ensures that benzimidazolone dyes dissaggregate at certain stages. 19refs.
