European dye manufacturers are developing comprehensive waste disposal strategies that seek to avoid or minimize waste via the use of synthetic methods and novel technologies, utilize waste for such novel applications as solvent recycling, build ecologically friendly waste disposal into the end of the production chain, increase the care and control of incinerating systems, and eliminate production processes that pose intractable waste disposal problems. An overview of dyeing industry environmental programs discusses legislation, absorbable organohalogens, mercury, cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, ammonia, surfactants, formaldehyde, sulfates, fluorides, sulfides, heavy metals, cotton and wool dyeing, reducing agents, polyester dyeing, and new processes and products developed in response to environmental pressures. 10 refs.
