Chemistry and Transport in Super and Sub Critical Fluids.

Researchers investigated the use of subcritical fluids (water and carbon dioxide) as transport and reaction media to develop environmentally friendly chemical process technology. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and thin layer chromatography confirmed the synthesis of the necessary reactive compound. Supercritical fluid chromatography evaluated the solubility of the synthesized dyes in subcritical carbon dioxide. Surface interaction experiments measured surface tension and dynamic contact angles. Functional groups formed covalent bonds with nylon and cellulose substrates in subcritical carbon dioxide, indicating that these groups could be incorporated into other soluble molecules, including dyes and antimicrobial agents. 3 refs.
