Chemical processes have long been used to remove or modify the cuticle to make cotton fiber water absorbent. Substitution of enzymes for such chemicals can mitigate environmental impact of effluents while lowering overall processing costs. Enzymatic hydrolysis is used widely in desizing, stone washing and bio-polishing, but research is now focusing on the area of wet processing.
