Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) studied the diffusion of fluorescein into nylon 66 fibers. LSCM derived high resolution three dimensional images of the fluorescein spatial distribution in the dyed fibers. Dye distribution data agreed with those derived by ultraviolet-visible spectro photometry, which was a more invasive method. Advantages of the LSCM method include its speed, nondestructive nature, ability to determine total dye content, and the clarity of dye distribution images across the fiber diameter. LSCM confirmed that ring dyed fibers gave a deeper shade than did uniformly dyed fibers. 21 refs.
