When OSHA promulgated rules to minimize employee exposure to bloodborns pathogens, it did not specify a barrier test method for protective clothing. Early tests developed by the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists, the Association of the Nonwoven Fabric Industry, and the American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM) differed with respect to the type of challenge liquid, the amount of fabric surface area in contact with the liquid, the type of exposure, and the exposure time. A study of methods that apply pressure to the fabric and the challenge liquid to test the barrier properties of surgical gowns concluded that hydrostatic pressure is more important in causing barrier failure than is mechanical pressure, and that the ASTM ES 22 test to Measure the viral resistance of fabrics under hydrostatic pressure was the most stringent of the available test. 7 refs.
