Recovery and reuse of caustic soda used in cotton mercerizing leads to a buildup of impurities in the mercerizing lye. Methods to remove the impurities from the recycled lye include a membrane filter, self cleaning weak lye filters an sedimentation tanks, and hydrogen peroxide treatment. Precleaning cotton fabrics by washing, suctioning, beating off fibers, singeing residues, and separating yarn oils reduces impurity buildup in the lye during mercerization. Hydrogen peroxide breaks up molecular chains, eliminates starch size, reduces lye viscosity so impurities separate out more easily, and bleaches reactive dyes. The bubbles formed from the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide transport impurities to the surface where they are mechanically removed.
