Sonolysis and photocatalysis are conventional oxidation processes used to degrade residual dyes in textile wastewater. Researchers evaluated the merits of combining the techniques to degrade naphtol blue black, a common azo dye. High frequency ultrasonics and ultraviolet photolysis simultaneously and sequentially resulted in an additive effect on the degradation rate of the parent compound. Sonolysis induced faster degradation of the parent dye. Titanium oxide photocatalysis effectively promoted mineralization. An optimized process resulted in 90 percent mineralization in 6 hours of combined sonlysis and photocatalysis. 28 refs.
