An investigation into the use of phenol oxidases from the fungi Pleurotus ostreatus, Schizophyllum commune, Sclerotium rolfsii, Neurospora crassa, Polyporus species, Trametes villosa, and Myceliophtora thermophila to decolor textile dyes revealed that all enzyme preparations efficiently decolored rates depended on the individual enzymes. The nature of substituents on the benzene rings of the dye influenced enzyme activity. Hydroxyl and amino groups improved decoloration. Lignin peroxidase and/or manganese peroxidase in addition to laccase increased decoloration bu up to 25 percent. Copper and iron chelating agents and anionic detergents inhibited Polyporus species and T. villosa by up to 20 percent by and S. commune enzymes by 70 percent. The evaluation of new enzymes and processes must take into consideration the effect of dyeing assistants. 36 refs.
