Treatment of Desizing Wastewater Containing Poly(vinyl alcohol)by Wet Air Oxidation

Scientists studied the efficacy of wet air oxidation for the treatment of disizing wastewater from manmade fiber manufacturing plants. Experiments at an oxygen pressure of less than 2 millipascals showed that chemical oxygen demand(COD) increased from 15-65 percent as the temperature increased from 150-250 degrees centigrade over 30 minutes. Biodegradability increased and removal of as much as 90 percent of the COD occurred within 120 minutes. A proposed kinetic model assumed a direct mineralization step in parallel with the formation of an intermediate product. Experiments indicated that the dependence of the specific reaction rate constants followed an Arrhenius equation. Direct oxidation of polyvinly alcohol to carbon dioxide and water dominated the reaction. 12 refs.
