A study of the contribution of polymer to the degradation of disperse dyes evaluated the physical and chemical changes occurrings in undyed polyester films exposed to natural and artificial light and correlated the results with dye fadings. Polyester films irradiated before and after dyeing experienced more color loss than did films that were dyed and irradiated. Ultraviolet absorbers reduced degradation of both the polyester and the dye. The presence of disperse dyes had a protective effect on the films. Accelerated fading using xenon arc light was more destructive on polyester films than was sunlight. 9 refs.
