Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) investigated molecular level dye diffusion in fibers. LSCM uses spot illumination to visualize the internal structures of solid polymers without physically sectioning the samples. LSCM observations of dyed fibers and microspectrophotometric measurements of their reflectance revealed the influence of dye distribution and fiber finish on fiber color. LSCM studies of fluorescence diffusion in uniformly dyed fibers provided measurements of dye mobility in the absence of a concentration gradient. Further research will use a new LSCM device to investigate the spectral behavior of dye across a fiber cross section and will construct an instrument to measure fluorescence recovery after photobleaching that will generate diffusion coefficients for dye molecules parallel and perpendicular to the fiber axis. 1 ref.
