Why CIELAB needs to be replaced for industrial color difference calculation

The agreement between the Munsell system as represented by the Munsell Renotations and the CIELAB formula is shown to be only moderate. A new formula has been fitted to teh Munsell Renotation data that describes it much better. However, historical information indicates that there are doublts about the visual uniformity of the Munsell Renotations. Similar but different formulas have been fitted to Munsell Re-renotation data and to the OSAUCS data. The same methodology can be used to obtain a better fit of a basis formula to color difference data, together with surround adaptation correction. Additional problems with CIELAB are discussed and the conclusion is drawn that CIELAB should be replaced as a basis formula for a uniform color space and small color difference calculation.
