Metals - both heavy and alkaline earth-can effect the success of preparation, dyeing and washing off of cotton and blends. The metals come from the cotton substrate itself, not the water, and are a result of production demands and forced cultivation-ie geology and climate of crop growing area, chemicals used in the cultivation and use of mechanical harvesters. Sequesterants used to combat the heavy metal threat do not offer an off the shelf solution and usage is dependant on characteristics, results and pollution considerations. Sequesterants fall into five classes: polyphosphate, aminopolycarboxylic acid; and these are reviewed. As the demand for cotton continues to increase so will the need for textile chemical suppliers to provide support to the textile processor, while ensuring environmental issues of heavy metal complexes in waste effluent are not ignored.
