This article is intended to shed light on the question of provenance of a group of batik cloths which are thought to have originated from Jambi in South America. As well as trying to solve this question it also seeks to unravel the history and circumstances behind the cloths which have given rise to differing opinions in published accounts concerning their provenance. It concludes that the question is never likely to ever be settled, but the weight of the evidence seems to suggest that some of the batiks were manufactured in Jambi. This is because during the period of Japanese occupation there was a lengthy hiatus in the production of batik and few people retained the knowledge of how to produce the red dye that colours these textiles.
