Sorption coefficients were measured for 12 direct dyes using sludge from a municipal treatment plant that normally receives dyehouse effluent. Cupric ion sorption was measured as a control. The results show that the direct dyes have average partition coefficients of about 8 × 103 L/Kg and, on average, 91% of the copper is removed from solution in four hours by sorption on the sludge. The relative standard deviation in the partitio coefficients across all solids, dyes, and times was 64% as measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and 128% as determined by liquid chromatography. The fraction of copper that was sorbed as the metal ion versus the metal complex colorant could not be determined.
