Pollution prevention in the production of dyes and pigments

This paper provides a summary of pollution prevention through waste minimization and source reduction successes and ideas in the production of dyes and pigments. Examples presented include process optimization in the synthesis of azo disperse dyes and pigments and substitution of toxic metals and gentoxic dye intermediates in the synthesis of metal complexed dyes for polymides, direct dyes for cotton, and replacements for toxic inorganic pigments containing cadmium, lead, nickel, copper, and for toxic lakes of azo pigments. A method for reusing priority pollutants, such as waste aniline and phenols, in dye synthesis and hydrolyzed reactive dyes is discussed. Energy savings, safety, and recycling opportunities resulting from preparing dye filter cakes with a higher percent solids and using reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, hyperfiltration to generate recyclabel water are presented.
