Nanofiltration membrane technology for caustic soda recovery

A process to recover a least 95% sodium hydroxide and water from textile mercerization wastewater has been developed using both laboratory and pilot scale nanofiltration membrane systems. Flux changes were measured in terms of operating temperature, filtration time, and sodium hydroxide concentrations. Pretreatment requirements as well as the proper cleaning method were established. A colorless clear permeate having the same caustic soda concentration as the feed solution was produced with COD and SS reduction. The results indicate that percent NaOH recovery is almost equal to percent volumetric recovery.
