This article traces the history of colour and dyes, making reference to pre-historic use of natural earth pigments. It charts the progression of dye technology from the beginning of scientific understanding and application during the Seventeenth century to the synthesis of quinine in 1856 and the discovery of the first synthetic dyestuff. The article also outlines some of the more recent theories of dyeing, introducing the molecular structure of some key dyes, and discusses the chemical reaction that takes place during the process.
