Begins a review of dyeing groups associated with cotton. Direct dyes readily dissolve in hot water, the resulting fabrics have poor fastness so are fixed in an acidic medium. Even so only some colours have geed fastness to cotton and these dyes are specifically marketed for dyeing the cotton part of polyester/cotton. Basic dyes have an intensity of colour not available with direct colours, but have poorer fastness so resulting fabrics are treated with a mordant. Direct dyes can act as a natural carrier of the basic dye dyed in an acidic medium, so shades first dyed in direct colours may be topped up with subsequent basic dyeing. Resultant fabrics are never washed in end use, and are mostly used for industrial use or small trades.
