Wool dyeing conventionally uses acid or premetallized dyes. Within these dye families exist a range of products with different dyeing and fastness properties, requiring optimization of the dye recipe and operations depending on specifications. Process optimization decreases dyeing defects and improves downstream processability. A review of wool dyeing with acid and prementallized dyes discusses their properties and levelling, defects that occur in wool prior to dyeing, the effects of processing on defects (carbonizing, chemical burling, washing, drycleaning, fulling, and bleaching), and critical factors to achieve leveling(leveling agents, sodium sulfate additives, pH, temperature, time, and dye dissolution). 11 refs.
