Uncontrolled dye migrationin fabric causes streakes, faded areas, and uneven shade depth. Researchers evaluated a combination of borax and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an antimigration agnet for reactive reactive dyes for polyester/cotton blend fabrics. Increasing borax and PVA concentrations decreased the percentage of dye migration. Forty grams per liter of borax and 10 grams per liter of PVA reduced blue dye migration from 26 percent to 15 percent to 4 percent. The borax and PVA formed a crosslinking gel that prevented water movement within the fabric capillary network. 8 refs.
