Consistently high whiteness is a quality parameter important in the manufacture of various knit fabrics. Advances in the brightening process and quality control systems have increased the reproducibility of whiteness factors. As whiteness capacities and the demand for whiteness as a quality parameter have increased, the need for improved whiteness testing technology has also increased. The Thuringian Materials and the Hohenstein Institute developed a method for reconciling measurements of the degree of whiteness according to Ganz, Taube, CIE, and Stephenson methods. Along with Ciba Specialty Chemicals, they developed a new White Scale that improves spectrophotometer calibration to increase the accuracy and reproducibility of whiteness testing.
