Researchers subjected polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fabrics to low temperature acrylic acid, water, and argon plasma treatments to increase their hydrophilicity, soil resistance, and dyeability. Controlling exposure time and discharge power controlled plasma surface modification. Fabrics were dyed with DyStar C.I. Basic Red 18. All three in situ polymerization methods increased the surface wettability, K/S color values, surface hydrophilicity, and soil resistance of the dyed fabrics. The absence of color changes after repeated washings and long periods of storage indicated highly stable molecular bonding between teh dye and the fabric. 32 refs.
