In a lecture at the tenth International Wool Textile Researcher Conference, Professor Jens-Holm Dittrich of Hannover University discussed right first time production of batch dyed wook, the absorption properties of powdered dyes, and the effects of moisture content of dyes and substrates on shade. Powdered dyes vary in weight at different relative humidities. Dye strength and moisture content must be measured and programmed prior to the calculation of dye recipes and shade predictons. At high humidities, some dyes more than double in weight. Investments in humidity control systems for areas where dyes and dyed products are stored minimize these problems and prove cost effective in the long term.
