Many textile processing problems relate to the improper selection of chemicals. Surfactants assist in wetting and emulsifying unsaponifiable materials and are important in scouring cotton/polyester blend fabrics. Temperature has an inverse effect on the solubility of nonionic surfactants. The hydrophilic/lyophilic balance is an index of surfactant wettability, emulsification, and detergency. Anionic surfactants are more stable in hard water. Surfactant foaming tendencies increase with the amount of ethylene oxide in nonionic surfactants. Sequestering agents fix calcium and magnesium in the water and prevent deposits and spots on the fabric. Iron packing drums many contaminate caustic soda and sodium carbonate. Testing chemical samples ensures trouble-free results in bulk operations.
