The FKO system for continuous chemical impregnation during dyeing uses high temperature steam prior to impregnation to improve liquor penetration and chemical reactivity. Saturated or superheated steam under pressure in a sealed chamber purges air from the fabric, which increases vapor and liquid penetration. A pressurized labyrinth sealing system squeezes excess liquor from the fabric, eliminates physical contact and friction as the fabric passes the seal, and contains the free liquor within the treatment chamber. A prototype system allows pretreatment and impregnation regimes at up to 40 psi and removes entrained water as effectively as vacuum extraction systems. 7 refs.
