A study dyed polyester and nylon 6 fabrics with azo and anthraquinone dyes modified with acetyl, benzoyl, and terephthaloyl groups and anthraquinone dyes modified with hydroxy ethylamino and carboxyalkylamino groups to examine the effects of dye structure on dyeability and correlate dye structure and dyeing properties via the solubility parameter concept. Results of modified azo and anthraquinone indicated that not all the dyes whose solubility parameters are similar to those of the substrate had good dye uptake. Hydrogen bonding was the main contributing force in nylon 6 dyeing, whereas van der Waals and associated forces controlled interactions during polyester dyeing. The size of the dye molecule also affected dye uptake with disperse dyes. 33 refs.
