The Development of the CIE 2000 Colour-Difference Formula: CIEDE 2000

Researchers developed a new CIE color difference equation based on CIELab that includes lightness, chromaticity, and hue weighting functions; an interactive term between chromaticity and hue differences for improving blue color performance; and a scaling factor for CIELab a* scale for improving gray color performance. The combination of four reliable color discrimination data sets based on object colors established the equations. Researchers used the combined data set and each individual data set to test the performance and predictability of the derived equation and other CIELab based equations. The derived equation outperformed CMC, CIE 94, BFD, and Leeds Color Difference equations. The CIE approved the derived equation and designated it as the CIEDE2000 color difference formula. 33 refs.
