A study to design textile dyes capable of imparting finishing effects to fibers synthesized disperse dyes that impart water resistance to cotton and polyethylene terepthalate (PET) fabrics. The dyes for PET fabrics contained hydrophobic groups, whereas the dyes for cotton fabrics were fiber reactive dyes. Yield and color were good, but water resistance was poor. Dyes containing perfluoroalkyl groups might impart both water and oil resistance at low concentrations. Recent experiments dyed PET fabrics with disperse dyes having a fluoroalkyl chain in the diazo component.
