The importance of Indian textiles in the arts and economies of Asia has been noticed by Europeans since the sixteenth century and some striking similarities between design motifs found on Indian trade cloths and on certain textiles produced by the Iban of Sarawak have occasionally led to speculations about a link between the two. Recent radiocarbon analysis of Indian trade cloths carried out at the Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit at Oxford University established much earlier dates than so far assumed; as the likely Indian prototype for the Iban designs is among the small group now dated, this paper addresses some aspects of a possible connection. Since the Iban textiles concerned seem to be generally of an early date, with surviving pieces woven in the early nineteenth century or before, the possible link becomes especially intriguing.
