Many mechanisms give rise to butterfly coloration. Interest has predominantly focused on mechanisms responsible for the brightest colours. Early work, with the aid of optical microscopy and knowledge of the physics of interference, discovered that high visibility was associated with structure; multi-layer systems were found to be the primary cause of bright iridescent coloration. Subsequent development of electron microscopy facilitated the characterization of such multi-layer systems in great detail. and more recent work on a wide range of butterfly species has led to a more complete understanding of wing coloration, as detailed in this article.
