Researchers evaluated the dye yields and fastness properties of cotton knit fabrics reacted with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The treatment yielded cationic dye sites covalently bound to the polymer chains that strongly attracted anionic direct and reactive dyes. The treated cottons showed excellent color yields and colorfastness equal or superior to conventionally treated and dyed fabrics, when dyed with a variety of direct and reactive dyes without the use of electrolytes. Cationic cotton fabric dyeing processes were shorter and used less water and energy and fewer chemical additives than conventional dyeing processes. Dyeing cationic cotton fabrics with acid dyes yielded shades darker than those yielded by conventional acid dyed cotton fabrics. 14 refs.
