A history of the Munsell color system uses the notes and sketches in Munsell's color diary to describe its development in a historical context. Albert Munsell studied art in the United States and Europe and became a lecturer in color composition and artistic anatomy. Hi began developing a color wheel in 1899 and developed all the key ideas in the Munsell color system between 1900-1904. He built a prototype photometer (lumenometer) in 1901. He first used the term chromaticity in a conceptual sketch of a color sphere in 1901. In 1904 he described his system using hue, value, and chromaticity and settled on his abbreviated notation method. The Munsell Color Company, founded in 1918 shortly before Munsell's death, published the Munsell Book of Colors. 35 refs.
