An introduction to internet based color management software describes how the different parts of the textile color supply chain utilize shared digital color. The specifier sends the required color to the fabric dyer electronically and as a physical swatch. The dyer begins working on the lab dip as soon as the digital swatch arrives, and sends the color digitally and physically to the specifier. The eventual reduction of technical and human constraints will eliminate the need for physical swatches. After approval, the dyer proceeds with full production, sends the result in physical and digital from for a second approval, and passes the digital readings of each cut roll to the assembler. Manufacturers of secondary fabrics and trimmings match the digital swatch sent from the main dyeing plant. The assembler and specifier match color swatches and examine the entire set of colors included in the individual garment. Because this sometimes involves comparing colors produced on different textures, several software suppliers added on-screen texture functionality.
