Important components in discharge printing are the vat color paste, reducing agent, steaming conditions, dye reduction, drying, and washing. Rongolite C reducing agent (sodium sulfoxylate formaldehyde) added to the warm thickener paste in lumps dissolves and aids dye reduction in situ on the printed fabric. Insufficient steam inhibits the action of the reducing agent and results in damaged fabrics. Properly steamed printed fabrics oxidize when exposed to air over a 2-3 hour period. Vat printing is an exothermic process in which the discharge reaction heats the fabric and necessitates ageing before storing printed fabrics. Tables provide sample recipes for thickeners and white and colored discharge dyes.
