Researchers investigated the feasibility of reusing dyebaths in polyester fiber dyeing. Ultraviolet-visible light spectroscopy and high performance thin layer chromatography evaluated yarns dyed with recycled dyebaths for neps, breakage, and Uster percentage. Laboratory tests determined the quantity of dyes and dyeing assistants needed to reconstitute the dyebaths. A mill trial collected the spent dyebath in a holding tank; recovered the heat with a heat exchanger; and pumped the stored dyebath to a high temperature, high pressure dyeing machine. Data indicated that the level of exhaustion depended on the dye. One hundred percent dye replenishment led to increased K/S values. Dyebath reuse had no effect on colorfastness properties or spinning performance. Future research will focus on the effects of contaminant buildup due to residual finishes and other extractable impurities. 7 refs.
